Pop-Palooza at ASAE 12 in Dallas

....uh, first off - Duran Duran were a vital, yeah, yeah, you never been hungry like the wolf bitch I'll tear those antlers off, I swear to God..uh huh..her name was Rio and and you can step the f*** outside my friend......Greg Behrendt

I am pretty sure that I have used this clip before but really, it seems appropriate for today....

I'm taking to the blog to invite you all to my session on Pop Culture at the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) upcoming conference in Dallas.  It's on Tuesday, August 14 at 10:45 in room C156...

Yes, I am going to spend at least 10 minutes putting pop culture into its relevant context in the United States as an integral part of our political, racial and economic history.  Then, we are going to spend the rest of the time dissecting our own pop culture personalities and seeing what leadership and community building lessons we can derive from it.

Now - here's the best part.  If you are coming to the session be sure to pack your pop culture best.  If you come to the session with something that expresses your pop culture/sub culture media/TV/movie/music/internet personality, I will put your name into a drawing.   We have four prizes for our drawing - from Elizabeth Baranik and Hard Rock Cafe a $25 and $50 gift card, we have an Amazon gift card for $25 and an iTunes gift card for $15!  (Anyone else want to donate a prize, just let me know!) The winners will also get a photo feature here on the Association Subculture blog.

Here are some ideas but be creative -
  • Concert or band t-shirt
  • Your favorite Hard Rock t-shirt from your favorite city
  • Concert tickets you have been hoarding for the last ten years to PROVE you were there
  • Buttons
  • 80's blinged out bracelets
  • Your best RuPaul-esque drag (this will get you five entries)
  • Sonic screwdrivers
  • A color printout of your avatar from World of Warcraft
  • An Avenged Sevenfold soup tureen
I mean whatevs.  Go nuts.  Let's close out ASAE 12 in our own freakish style.  Nobody will care what you are wearing, sporting or dragging along behind's the last day and you will be surrounded by conference zombies who are focused on getting a cab to the airport....

This is all about who you are and maybe meeting other people with secret TV obsessions just like you!

  1. GREAT IDEA, SHELLY! Wish I was going to be there. I'm going to pass this on to my team that will be in Dallas. WIll miss you this time.

  2. Dave -

I will miss seeing you! Hope to see you again soon!

  3. Cannot even start to tell you how fun this session was!

If you hadn't had to hustle out to catch your plane you would've been accosted during the evening's festivities about how folks really connected and responded to the session.

Instead, people approached me and raved. I was happy to handle all the adoration. :) But let's see what they had to say:

**Best session of the entire conference
**I really felt connected to the whole group and it was so much FUN!
**Makes me think about new ways to connect to those staff and volunteers where I struggle to find a way to understand them

Girl, you are making great, strong offers into the world and people are benefiting.

So, when do we do it again? :)

  4. Awwww....thanks Sandra! Actually according to my phone and my email account it looks like I'm going to be doing it again several times :D

Couldn't have been so fun without all the folks in the audience who got into it and were willing to share with each a big thanks to you all!
